UCAN Power Supports Navy Program to Power Shore Facilities with Advanced Reactors
The United Coalition for Advanced Nuclear Power (UCAN Power), a nonprofit dedicated to the adoption of advanced nuclear technologies for military and civil use, applauds the Department of the Navy for issuing a Request For Information aimed at powering Navy and Marine Corps shore facilities with advanced nuclear technologies. A copy of the RFI can be found here: SAM.gov.
UCAN has advocated for the Department of Defense to take an active, leading role in catalyzing the advanced nuclear industry while simultaneously improving the resilience of its vital facilities and boosting the readiness of America’s fighting forces. In June, UCAN released a draft Executive Order titled “Expanding Nuclear Energy Capabilities to Improve Climate, National, and Energy Security,” which included a directive for DOD to employ small nuclear reactors at an additional 10 military installations over the next decade. By pursuing advanced nuclear solutions for up to seven Navy and Marine Corps installations, and potentially more, the Department of the Navy’ has taken a large step in the right direction.
UCAN urges the Navy and DOD to implement this new initiative expeditiously, while also accelerating and expanding current Air Force and Army/Defense Innovation Unit micro-reactor programs as rapidly as possible.
