U.S. Air Force Releases Request for Proposals to Use Nuclear Power at Eielson AFB, Alaska
The First Use of Advanced Nuclear Power Technology Powering a Military Base
Washington D.C. — The Department of the Air Force, in partnership with the Defense Logistics Agency Energy, released a request for proposal for the Eielson Air Force Base Micro-Reactor Pilot Program today. UCAN Power commends this important first step to use next-generation energy technology needed for energy resilience at Eielson Air Force Base and to inform future initiatives to power national security infrastructure.
“The use of advanced nuclear reactors not only will allow the Air Force to provide mission assurance regardless of the availability of commercial power, but it reduces the value of an attack on the Nation’s power grid by diminishing the impact to critical military missions.” Said Lucian Niemeyer, former Assistant Secretary of Defense and co-founding principal of UCAN Power. “We have the opportunity for advanced nuclear reactors to provide reliable, clean power to complement other energy sources as electricity demands increase in the coming decades across the country.
UCAN Power will work with the Department of Defense to raise awareness, promote policies, and collaborate on the achievement of this program.” A link to information for the Air Force Request can be found at
